Dale Chihuly's Mango Basket
With its translucent, brilliant color fading to almost clear, the 2000 Studio Edition release of the Mango Basket with Teal Lip Wrap exemplifies the fluid, malleable shapes found in the Basket series. Each piece, hand-blown and signed by the artist, measures approximately 7 inches tall. Accompanying the Mango Basket is a specially designed display vitrine.
Dale Chihuly’s Basket series, inspired by the woven baskets of the northwest Coast, is noted for its exploration of form rather than surface and is most famous for its engaging slumped and wrinkled forms. As writer Vera White puts it, “With this series, Chihuly liberated his glassblowing process from the restrictions of symmetry, allowing the glass to respond naturally to gravity.”
